A forest park on the Sabarmati river with a dinosaur fossil area, a deer park and walking trails. A calm escape in Gandhinagar.
What It Is and Its History
Indroda Nature Park is a forested area along the west bank of the Sabarmati river in Gandhinagar. It serves as a nature reserve and an educational centre. The park includes a dinosaur fossil park, which displays life-sized models and fossil remains found in Gujarat. The Gujarat Ecological Education and Research (GEER) Foundation manages the site. The park opened in the 1990s as a conservation and awareness project. It is one of the few places in India where you can see dinosaur fossils in a natural setting.
The park covers a large area of dry deciduous forest, typical of the region. The deer park houses several species of Indian deer, including spotted deer, sambar and blackbuck. The park also has a botanical garden with labelled native plants and a small zoo. It is a popular spot for school trips and families. The GEER Foundation runs educational programmes here. The park is part of a larger green corridor along the Sabarmati.

The animals are used to visitors but keep a respectful distance.
Walking trails wind through the forest. They are shaded by trees like neem, banyan and acacia. The Sabarmati riverbank is accessible from some parts of the park. There is also a children's play area and a small lake. The botanical garden has labelled plants native to Gujarat. The park is quiet and green, a contrast to the planned sectors of Gandhinagar.
