Mahatma Mandir & Dandi Kutir

Mahatma Mandir is part convention centre, part memorial: halls for summits and trade fairs, gardens, and a footbridge lined with small wind turbines. Since the early 2010s it has hosted the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit and most of the state’s big events.

Across the bridge, Dandi Kutir tells Gandhi’s life through audio-visual galleries inside a building shaped like a mound of salt — a nod to the 1930 Salt March. Allow about 90 minutes; it’s an easy add-on after an event.

Gandhinagar travel guide: what to know before you book

Gandhinagar has been the capital of Gujarat since 1970. Named after Mahatma Gandhi, it was planned from scratch on the west bank of the Sabarmati, about 25 km north of Ahmedabad, by architects H. K. Mewada and Prakash M. Apte. The city is laid out as a grid of 30 numbered sectors separated by wide, tree-lined roads, with large green belts — a calm contrast to Ahmedabad’s old-city bustle.

Most visitors come for work: state government in the central sectors, conventions and the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit at Mahatma Mandir, and finance at GIFT City, India’s first International Financial Services Centre. With Ahmedabad’s airport 20–45 minutes away, it is easy to fly in, work and add an evening at Akshardham or the Adalaj stepwell.

Where to stay in Gandhinagar

Stay in GIFT City if your office is there — you can walk between towers. For events at Mahatma Mandir or meetings with government, Sectors 13 and 14 keep transfers to minutes, and a hotel sits right above Gandhinagar Capital railway station. Sector 20 is quiet and close to Akshardham. Sargasan and Kudasan, on the southern edge, offer good value with fast roads to both cities, while Koba and the airport side suit very short trips. Compare them in our sector guide.
