Staying in GIFT City, Gandhinagar
India’s first International Financial Services Centre — and the shortest commute in Gujarat if your office is here.
Gujarat International Finance Tec-City — GIFT City — is a purpose-built business district on the Sabarmati between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. It houses India’s first International Financial Services Centre (IFSC), with international exchanges, bank branches, insurers and fund managers operating under a special regulatory regime.
Why stay inside GIFT City
- Walk to the office — towers are close together and connected by wide pavements.
- Avoid the daily drive from Ahmedabad, which can take 45 minutes or more at peak times.
- Business hotels here are built for long stays, with workspaces, gyms and meeting rooms.
- GIFT City has its own rules on alcohol at permitted venues — a rarity in dry Gujarat.

What’s nearby
The district is still growing, so evenings are quiet. Restaurants and cafés are mostly inside hotels and office podiums. For more choice, Sargasan and Kudasan are 10–15 minutes away, and Ahmedabad’s SG Highway is about half an hour.
Getting around
App cabs and hotel cars are the norm. Ahmedabad Metro’s second phase now reaches GIFT City; check current stations and timings before relying on it.
What the IFSC means for visitors
An International Financial Services Centre is a special zone where financial firms can deal in foreign currencies and serve global clients under a separate regulator — in GIFT City’s case, the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA). For visitors this means two things: a steady flow of bankers, lawyers, auditors and fintech teams, and an environment that feels more like Singapore’s CBD than a typical Indian suburb.
The district also includes a domestic tariff area with IT offices, residential towers, a school and retail. Infrastructure was planned from scratch: district cooling, underground utility tunnels and automated waste collection are all part of the design.

Who should stay here
- Teams on multi-day assignments at banks, exchanges or fintech firms in the IFSC.
- Delegates at conferences hosted inside GIFT City.
- Travellers splitting meetings between Gandhinagar’s sectors and Ahmedabad — it sits roughly in the middle.
- Long-stay visitors who value quiet evenings, gyms and workspaces over nightlife.
Who might prefer elsewhere
If your meetings are at the Secretariat or Mahatma Mandir, Sectors 13–14 are closer. If you want restaurants, shopping and street life after work, Ahmedabad’s SG Highway or the Riverfront offer far more. And if you are only in town for one night with an early flight, the airport side of Ahmedabad is simpler.
Eating and drinking
Most dining is in hotels and office podiums, with cafés and quick-service counters for working lunches. Gujarat is a dry state, but GIFT City has rules allowing alcohol at certain permitted venues for eligible employees and authorised visitors — conditions apply and change, so ask your hotel what is currently allowed. For a Gujarati thali or street snacks, head to Sargasan and Kudasan, 10–15 minutes away.
Getting there
- From AMD airport: 20–35 minutes by app cab or hotel car.
- From Ahmedabad’s SG Highway: about 30 minutes.
- From Gandhinagar Sector 13: 15–25 minutes.
- Metro: the second phase of Ahmedabad Metro links GIFT City with Motera and Gandhinagar — check live service details.
Booking tips
Rates are highest Monday to Thursday and during big financial events and the Vibrant Gujarat summit. Look for hotels that include breakfast, Wi-Fi and airport transfers, and choose free cancellation where possible — meeting schedules here move fast. Every stay booked on IMPT funds one tonne of verified carbon offset, which many companies now count towards their ESG travel reporting.
GIFT City is still growing, with new towers and amenities opening each year. For business travellers it already offers the shortest commute in Gujarat — and a glimpse of how India’s next generation of cities may look.
Getting Around GIFT City
GIFT City is designed as a walkable business district with wide footpaths and shaded areas. You can move between buildings on foot or use the internal shuttle services that run during business hours. The metro station connects to the main Gandhinagar line, making it easy to reach from the sectors or Ahmedabad. Taxis and app-based rides are available at designated pick-up points near the main plaza. For those driving, parking is available in multi-level lots near the commercial towers. The road network within GIFT City is well signposted, with clear directions to the residential zones and the central business area. Security personnel guide visitors at entry gates. Cycling is not common inside the complex, but the surrounding roads are flat and suitable for short rides.
The internal shuttle service operates on a fixed route, covering the main office blocks and the residential towers. You can board at any marked stop; the service is free for visitors and residents. The metro station is at the northern edge of the complex, a short walk from the central plaza. For longer journeys, taxis wait at the station exit. The roads are wide and traffic is light, making driving straightforward. Pedestrians have priority on internal roads, and crossings are clearly marked. If you arrive by bicycle, you can park at designated racks near the entrances. The entire district is flat, so walking is easy even in warm weather. Always carry a map or use a navigation app, as the numbered blocks can be confusing at first.
Practical Tips for Visitors
Carry a valid photo ID for entry, as security checks are routine at all gates. Dress in business casual or smart attire; the environment is corporate but relaxed. Photography may be restricted near certain financial offices, so ask permission before taking pictures of buildings. The area has several cafes and food courts serving vegetarian meals, as Gujarat is a dry state. Plan your visit on a weekday to see the district at its most active. Weekends are quieter, with fewer office workers. Check the metro schedule in advance, as frequencies vary. The nearest hospital and pharmacy are within the complex. Carry a water bottle, especially in warmer months, as the open plazas have limited shade.
The food courts offer a variety of vegetarian options, from Gujarati thalis to North Indian snacks and continental dishes. You can find quick meals near the metro station and in the central plaza. For a sit-down meal, head to the hotels within the complex. The retail outlets include convenience stores and a small supermarket. If you need cash, ATMs are located near the main office towers. The area is safe for solo travellers, with security patrols day and night. Public toilets are clean and well maintained, located near the plaza and the metro station. The local language is Gujarati, but English is widely understood in offices and shops. Always keep your phone charged, as the complex has good mobile coverage.
