GIFT City Riverfront: Evening Walks
A walk along the Sabarmati riverfront and through the towers of India's first International Financial Services Centre. Best visited in the evening.
What it is and its history
GIFT City (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City) is India's first International Financial Services Centre (IFSC). It lies on the west bank of the Sabarmati river, south-east of Gandhinagar's numbered sectors. The development began in the early 2000s as a planned financial hub, with high-rise office towers, residential blocks and a riverfront promenade. The riverfront walk runs along the Sabarmati, offering views of the water and the city skyline. The area is designed for pedestrians, with wide paths, landscaping and lighting.
In the evening, the towers light up, creating a modern urban landscape. The project aims to bring global finance to Gujarat, and the riverfront provides a public space for relaxation and exercise. The design draws on international examples of riverfront development. The promenade is a place for locals and visitors to walk, jog or sit by the water. The river itself is an important water source for the region, and the banks have been landscaped with native plants.
What to see
The main attraction is the riverfront promenade itself. You can walk along the Sabarmati, watching the water and the reflection of the towers. The paths are smooth and well-maintained, suitable for a leisurely stroll or a jog. Benches and shaded areas are placed at intervals, allowing you to sit and take in the view. The towers of GIFT City rise behind the riverfront. They house offices, banks and financial institutions. The architecture is modern, with glass facades and clean lines.
At night, the buildings are lit, and the area has a calm, professional atmosphere. You can also see the Sabarmati river, which is wider here than in the sectors. The riverfront is clean and well-kept, with gardens and small lawns. The landscaping includes trees and shrubs that provide some shade during the day. The walk offers a contrast between the natural river setting and the built environment of the finance district. The lighting design highlights the architectural features of the towers.

How to get there
GIFT City is south-east of Gandhinagar's sectors, about 8 km from the city centre. You can reach it by road from the main sectors via the G Road or the Sarkhej–Gandhinagar Highway. The Ahmedabad Metro's extension has a branch to GIFT City; check the current service for the nearest station and timings. From Ahmedabad, the distance is about 20 km. You can take a taxi or a private vehicle. The riverfront is within walking distance from the GIFT City metro station if the service is running.
Parking is available near the riverfront. The area is well-signposted, and the roads are wide and well-lit. If you are coming from the airport, the drive takes about 30 minutes depending on traffic. The riverfront is accessible by bicycle or on foot from the GIFT City residential areas. The roads are designed for easy navigation, with clear signage for the riverfront. Public transport options include buses that connect GIFT City to the sectors and Ahmedabad.
When to go and how long to allow
The best time to visit is from November to February, when the weather is cool and pleasant. Evenings are ideal, as the temperature drops and the towers are lit. Summer months, from March to June, are very hot, with temperatures often above 40 °C in May. Monsoon season, July to September, brings rain, but the riverfront remains accessible. The winter evenings are particularly pleasant for a walk, with a gentle breeze from the river. The lighting on the promenade is switched on after sunset.
Allow about one to two hours for a full visit. You can walk the length of the riverfront, sit by the water and take photographs. If you plan to explore the wider GIFT City area, add another hour. The area is safe and well-lit in the evening, but it is advisable to finish your walk before late night, as the area is a business district and can become quiet. The riverfront is less crowded on weekday evenings. Weekends see more visitors, especially families and joggers.
