South Gandhinagar & GIFT City
The southern belt of Gandhinagar runs from Sargasan to GIFT City, mixing residential towers, IT parks and India's first international financial centre.
Character of the zone
South Gandhinagar is the city's fastest-growing corridor, stretching along the Ahmedabad road from Sargasan to GIFT City. Unlike the grid of numbered sectors to the north, this area developed organically around major infrastructure: the Ahmedabad highway, the metro line and the Sabarmati riverfront. The landscape shifts from older villages like Koba to new high-rise apartments in Kudasan and the glass towers of GIFT City.
The zone feels transitional. Sargasan and Kudasan are busy with shops, malls and hotels catering to commuters. Infocity and Raysan house IT offices and tech parks. Koba, near the airport, retains a semi-rural edge. GIFT City is a dedicated financial district with its own skyline, riverfront promenade and security protocols. The green belt along the Sabarmati links several parks and gardens.
- Sargasan and Kudasan have the highest concentration of hotels and restaurants.
- Infocity and Raysan are quieter at night, mainly office and residential.
- Koba offers easy access to the airport and the Koba temple road.
- GIFT City has controlled entry; carry ID for access to the financial zone.
Getting around and distances
The Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar road runs through the centre of this zone. Sargasan is about 5 km south of the main sectors; GIFT City is another 8 km south-east. The metro line serves Infocity, Raysan and GIFT City, with stations at Infocity, Sector-1 and Mahatma Mandir. Check the current service, as extensions open in phases. Auto-rickshaws and app-based taxis are available; buses run along the main road.
From the airport, Koba is the closest neighbourhood, about 6 km by road. The airport is about 18 km from Sargasan and 25 km from GIFT City. Gandhinagar Capital railway station is roughly 10 km north of Sargasan. For local travel, the grid of lettered roads (Ch, Gh, J, K) continues into this zone, but directions often refer to landmarks rather than sector numbers.
Sights nearby
Adalaj stepwell, five storeys deep and completed in 1498, is about 6 km west of Sargasan. The Trimandir temple is nearby. Indroda Nature Park, on the Sabarmati south of the sectors, has forest trails, a deer park and a dinosaur fossil park. Sarita Udyan and Punit Van are riverside gardens with walking paths. Mahatma Mandir in Sector 13 hosts the biennial investment summit and the Dandi Kutir museum on Gandhi's life.
GIFT City has its own riverfront promenade along the Sabarmati, with views of the financial towers. The area is clean and well maintained, with security at entry points. The metro connects Mahatma Mandir to GIFT City. Most sights are within 10 km of each other; plan a half-day for Adalaj and Trimandir, and another half-day for Indroda Park and the riverfront gardens.
- Adalaj stepwell: open daylight hours; an entry fee applies.
- Indroda Nature Park: check opening days; the dinosaur park is a separate section.
- Sarita Udyan and Punit Van are free to enter; ideal for a short walk.
- Dandi Kutir at Mahatma Mandir: check timings for the museum and exhibitions.
Who should stay here
South Gandhinagar suits visitors who need quick access to Ahmedabad or the airport. Business travellers to GIFT City or the IT parks find the hotels in Kudasan and Sargasan convenient. The area has more mid-range and upscale accommodation than the central sectors. Families visiting Adalaj stepwell or Indroda Park can base themselves near Sargasan for easy day trips.
The zone is less quiet than the northern sectors but more lively, especially around the malls and restaurants on the main road. If you prefer a quieter stay, choose a hotel set back from the highway. The metro makes it possible to explore the rest of Gandhinagar without a car. GIFT City itself has limited accommodation; most visitors stay in Kudasan or Sargasan and commute.
Practical tips
Gujarat is a dry state. Since 2023, a limited relaxation allows alcohol in specified facilities in GIFT City for employees and authorised visitors. Check the current rules before travel. Vegetarian food is the norm across the zone; Gujarati thali, dhokla, khaman and fafda-jalebi are widely available. Carry water, especially in summer when temperatures often exceed 40 °C.
Most foreign visitors need an Indian visa; many nationalities can apply for an e-Visa online at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Rules change, so check before travel. The best time to visit is November to February, when the climate is pleasant. The investment summit in January brings extra crowds and events to Mahatma Mandir. Uttarayan (14 January) is a kite-flying festival celebrated across the city.
- Carry a copy of your passport and visa for GIFT City entry.
- Use the metro for longer trips; auto-rickshaws are best for short hops.
- Check opening hours of museums and parks online before visiting.
- The riverfront at GIFT City is best visited in the late afternoon.
