Getting there from Ahmedabad

The journey starts at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (AMD) in Ahmedabad, about 18–20 km from central Gandhinagar. Non-stop flights operate from AMD to Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK). The flight time is approximately 4 hours 45 minutes. Check the current schedule as services vary by season.

Connecting flights via hubs such as Mumbai, Delhi or Dubai are also available. These add 3–6 hours to the total travel time. Always confirm the layover duration and transit visa requirements if changing airports. Book early for better availability. The Ahmedabad Metro's extension to the airport area is under development; check the current status before travel.

  • Non-stop flights from AMD to BKK take about 4 h 45 m.
  • Connecting flights via Mumbai, Delhi or Dubai are common.
  • Check transit visa rules if changing airports outside India.

Entry rules for Indian passport holders

Indian passport holders need a valid visa to enter Thailand. The rules change frequently. Check the official website of the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi or the e-Visa portal before booking. As of late 2025, an e-Visa is available for tourism, valid for up to 60 days. The application requires a scanned passport, a photograph, flight itinerary and proof of accommodation.

Visa-on-arrival is not currently available for Indian nationals at Thai airports. Always carry a printed copy of your visa approval and return ticket. Immigration officers may ask for proof of funds. The passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry. Check the latest updates a week before departure.

  • Apply for an e-Visa at the official Thai e-Visa portal.
  • Passport must be valid for six months from entry date.
  • Carry printed visa, return ticket and hotel booking.

When to go

The best time to visit Thailand is from November to February. The weather is cooler and drier, with temperatures in Bangkok ranging from 25 °C to 30 °C. This period also includes the festive season and the Thai New Year (Songkran) in mid-April, though April is hot. Avoid March to May if you dislike high heat and humidity.

The monsoon season runs from June to October. Rain is frequent but often short. Travel is still possible, and accommodation rates are lower. For a balance of good weather and fewer crowds, consider late November or early February. Always check the local forecast before packing.

Where to go: Bangkok

Bangkok is the primary destination for non-stop flights from Ahmedabad. The city is a mix of historic temples, modern malls and lively street markets. Visit the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun for classic sights. The Chatuchak Weekend Market is good for shopping. Take a boat ride on the Chao Phraya River for a different view of the city.

For a quieter experience, explore the green spaces of Lumpini Park or the canals of Thonburi. The city has a good public transport system: the BTS Skytrain and MRT metro cover most areas. Taxis and tuk-tuks are widely available; agree on the fare before starting. Bangkok also offers cooking classes, Thai massage and rooftop dining.

  • Key sights: Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, Chatuchak Market.
  • Use BTS Skytrain and MRT metro to avoid traffic.
  • Boat rides on the Chao Phraya are a practical and scenic option.

Money and practical tips

The Thai currency is the baht (THB). Carry some cash for small purchases, as many street stalls and local shops do not accept cards. ATMs are widely available in Bangkok. Notify your bank before travel to avoid card blocks. Currency exchange counters at the airport and in the city offer competitive rates. Avoid exchanging money on the street.

Thailand uses Type A, B and C electrical plugs (220 V, 50 Hz). Carry a universal adapter if your devices have Indian plugs. Tap water is not safe to drink; buy bottled water. Thailand is generally safe for tourists, but watch your belongings in crowded areas. Travel insurance is recommended. Learn a few basic Thai phrases like 'hello' (sawasdee) and 'thank you' (khob khun).

Booking a stay

Bangkok offers accommodation across all budgets. For first-time visitors, areas like Sukhumvit, Silom and Khao San Road are convenient. Sukhumvit has good transport links and many dining options. Silom is the business district with mid-range hotels. Khao San Road is popular with backpackers and budget travellers. Book in advance, especially during peak season from November to February.

Consider the location relative to the BTS or MRT stations for easy travel. Hotels near the airport are available for late arrivals or early departures. Many hotels offer free Wi-Fi and breakfast. Read recent reviews on booking platforms. For longer stays, serviced apartments are a good option. Always confirm the cancellation policy before booking.
